Fairfield County, SC (WLTX) - Governor Nikki Haley has appointed Dunstan C. Padgett to serve as the new sheriff of Fairfield County.
Haley announced her decision Wednesday morning, one day after Sheriff Herman Young resigned from the office. Previous Coverage:Herman Young Steps Down Padgett was sworn in later in the day.
In a statement, Young said he was leaving after 22 years on the job for health reasons.
A 26-year veteran of the Fairfield County Sheiriff's Office, Padgett has worked in narcotics and in the patrol division, where he now serves as a captain.
He also served 27 years in the South Carolina National Guard. While in the guard, he was deployed to Kosovo in 2004 and in Afghanistan in 2007 and 2008.
Padgett will serve as sheriff until a special election can be held.
