COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Forestry officials are preparing for what could be a busy weekend fighting wildfires in South Carolina.

The state Forestry Commission says the nice weather Saturday and Sunday combined with plenty of fallen trees and other debris from this month's ice and snow storm may get more people to set fires to burn their yard waste.

State law requires people to call the Forestry Commission before burning. On Thursday, officials say they received more than 1,700 calls. Agency firefighters also responded to 35 fires that got out of control.

The Forestry Commission says anyone who loses control of a debris fire will be fined. They recommend burning debris in small fire and always staying close to the fires.

The agency has more information about outdoor burning at its website: http://www.state.sc.us/forest/fire.htm.
