Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The Edisto River is one of the top ten most endangered rivers in the country.

That is according to a report from American Rivers, a Washington-based environmental group, which names the Edisto River the sixth most endangered.

The threat is due to excessive water withdrawals putting fish and wildlife, recreation, and water quality at risk. Excessive agriculture withdrawals can take up to 35 percent of the river's flow during summer months, according to the report.

The Edisto River is the longest free-flowing blackwater river in the country, flowing more than 250 miles.

The report names the San Joaquin River in California, the number one most endangered river.
