A 14-year-old's family is suing Gaffney Middle School after drinking a sports drink tainted with bleach. His lawyer says the school failed to supervise the cooler.
GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) - A middle school basketball player who drank a sports drink tainted with bleach is suing a South Carolina school.
Relatives of the 14-year-old accuse Gaffney Middle School officials of failing to supervise the cooler. The family is seeking $350,000.
The student drank four cups of sports drink from a cooler at a Jan. 22 game. The suit says the boy was nauseous and unable to eat. He has recovered.
Last month, authorities said another Gaffney Middle School student had admitted putting a small amount of bleach in an opposing school's water cooler during a basketball game. Police said no one was sickened by the bleach, but the lawsuit says the teen had blisters in his mouth and his lips were swollen.
School officials have not commented on the allegations.
