Charleston, SC (WLTX) - College of Charleston President Glenn McConnell has fired men's basketball coach Doug Wojcik.

McConnell announced his decision Tuesday afternoon in a statement, saying the dismissal is effective immediately, and that Wojcik was let go for "just cause."

Wojcik was the subject of a 50-page report by the school earlier this year that detailed charges from players and staff of verbal abuse by the coach. Nearly two dozen people told investigators that Wojcik made threats of physical violence and harsh personal attacks. The report also contained a statement in the report, Athletics Director Joe Hull reportedly said that Wojick was difficult to manage.

While not addressing the allegations specifically, McConnell did say he acted in the best interests of the school.

"As president, my highest priorities include the safeguarding of our College community, the preservation and enhancement of the College's excellent reputation, and the creation of a campus environment in which all students, faculty, staff, volunteers, friends and guests feel welcome, safe and respected," McConnell said.

McConnell said Hull has been placed in charge of the basketball team.

Wojcik had been the coach of the team since 2012.
