Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The Black Team beat the Garnet for the second year in a row, 28-10, at South Carolina's Spring Game Saturday.
USC starting quarterback Dylan Thompson led the Black squad, going 8-of-11 for 129 yards and a passing touchdown.
The scoring started early when Thompson led a 10-play drive that ended when Brandon Wilds ran in a three-yard touchdown. The Garnet team responded quickly, though, when on their next possession freshman QB Connor Mitch threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Shon Carson. Thompson then led another scoring drive that included a 34-yard completion to Jerell Adams and a four-yard touchdown run by David Williams.
The Black team led for the remainder of the game.
The winning side also got some scoring from an unexpected source: USC Women's Basketball Coach Dawn Staley. Just before the half, Staley ran onto the field during the middle of a play and caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Thompson.
USC Head Football Coach Steve Spurrier had set up the play with Staley earlier in the week. Afterward, he called it the best play of the game.
Staley and the women's basketball team were also honored at halftime for winning the SEC regular season title this past season. Spurrier gave out spring awards as well, including a "Legend Award" to Marcus Lattimore, who Spurrier credited with helping to build the program to its current level of success.
The announced attendance for the game was 36,412.
