Raleigh, NC (WLTX) --- The NCAA Tournament has a history of big-time upsets but the biggest on paper has never happened.
Friday night in Raleigh, Coastal Carolina gets its shot at being the first 16 seed to knock off a number one seed when it faces Virginia in the East Regional.
The Cavaliers won the ACC regular season and conference tournament and earned one of the four number one seeds.
Coastal Carolina earned the automatic bid to the Big Dance by winning the Big South Tournament.
Chanticleer head coach Cliff Ellis has now led four different programs to the NCAA Tournament - South Alabama, Clemson, Auburn and now Coastal Carolina. The veteran feels it will not be that far down the road when a 16 does indeed beat a 1.
"I feel the opportunity for a 16 seed to beat a one seed is better today than it was 10 years ago," Ellis said.
"It's going to happen and it shouldn't be an embarrassment to the number one team when it happens."
No doubt Ellis hopes coaching in familiar territory in Raleigh will provide some positive momentum for his team.
