Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Large hail fell across the Midlands Friday as a rapidly moving cold front touched off storms in the area.
Reports of hail began around 7 p.m. in Fairfield and Kershaw Counties, then quickly spread to Richland County.
The National Weather Service is still gathering information about the largest sizes seen, but News19 viewers submitted photos showing hail stones between golf ball and baseball size. Some lawns were covered in a hail layer so complete it appeared to be snow.
There are also multiple reports of cars with their glass broken out or other structural damage.
There were also reports of wind damage and lighting strikes on trees.
At the peak of the storm, SCE&G reported nearly 6,000 homes and businesses without power in Richland County, while Duke/Progress in Sumter reported nearly 6,200 outages.
