Irmo Hopes To Pull Off One More Upset

The surprise team of the state championship games is Irmo which is not the same team it was in January.

Back in January, a spot in the Class 5A state championship game was not on Tim Whipple's radar.

"We were fighting for our playoff lives in January, we didn't know if we would get in," said Whipple who has won five state championships at Irmo.

"We were 2-5 in the region, 11-7 overall. Something clicked, something happened. I can't put a finger on it. I wish I could. All i know is I have to give credit to the guys. They were resilient, they got through it, they worked hard, kept good attitudes and started finding ways to win instead of finding ways to lose.

Irmo's playoff run included wins at home over Wando and victories at Sumter and West Ashley which set up a rematch of the Lower State championship game with top-ranked Blythewood. The Yellow Jackets won a thrilling 49-48 battle and will take a 10-game winning streak into Friday night's showdown with defending state champion Dorman.

The question is can the Yellow Jackets pull off one more upset.

"We've been doubted all year," said senior guard Raekwon Heath.

"So my team wanted to go and show that we can beat teams we shouldn't beat. I feel like we're very ready for it."
