As Clemson kicked off spring practice, there is much speculation as to when will Dabo Swinney announce that Trevor Lawrence is the starting quarterback.
But pumping the brakes on that talk might be wise considering the Tigers have a very seasoned quarterback returning in Kelly Bryant. Although the Tigers ended the season on a sour note, Bryant was a big reason why Clemson was in the playoffs for the third consecutive year.
"We didn't luck up and win the ACC," Swinney said Wednesday before the first spring practice.
"We beat some good teams, and (Bryant) was a big part of that."
Lawrence was rated as the top quarterback in the country out of Cartersville, Georgia. He broke Deshaun Watson's passing records in the Peach State and comes in with a lot of hype. But Swinney
"He has unbelievable arm talent, size and can run,” Swinney said.
“He has great experience and is an awesome winner.”
The starting quarterback will come from a quartet of Bryant, Lawrence, Chase Brice and Hunter Johnson.
“As a coach, that beats choosing from the best of the bad any day of the week,” he said.
“It is what is. We have a lot of great competition and they are going to make each other better, but they all understand that somebody has to run out there first."
