'The Lion King' coming to Columbia

The live show will be part of Broadway in Columbia's 2021-2022 season

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Broadway in Columbia has announced that "The Lion King" will be coming to Columbia's Koger Center next season.

Although no date has been set, expect what has been called "the world's #1 musical" to roar into town sometime in early 2022.

Broadway in Columbia's seasons run September through May. 

Currently, the popular "Wicked" is in the middle of a three week run at Koger Center. The musical tells a story of the witches in "The Wizard of Oz" before the arrival of Dorothy.

Upcoming shows in the 2020-2021 season include:

  • Les Miserables: Sept. 29-Oct. 4: Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption – a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit.
  • A Magical Cirque Christmas: Dec. 16-17: Experience the magic of Christmas with dazzling performers and breathtaking cirque artists from all corners of the world, accompanied by your favorite holiday music performed live. Get into the spirit of the season with this merry treat that’s perfect for the entire family.
  • Waitress: Jan. 19-20, 2021: Waitress tells the story of Jenna, an expert pie maker who dreams of a way out of her small town. A baking contest and the town’s new doctor may offer her a fresh start, but Jenna must summon the strength to rebuild her own life.
  • Jersey Boys: Feb. 21, 2021: They were just four guys from Jersey, until they sang their very first note. Go behind the music and inside the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.
  • Fiddler On the Roof: March 22-23, 2021: A wonderful cast and a lavish orchestra tell this heartwarming story of fathers and daughters, husbands and wives, and the timeless traditions that define faith and family.
  • South Pacific: April 6-7, 2021: Set on a tropical island during World War II, this timeless Rodgers and Hammerstein classic features some of the most beautiful music ever composed woven into an inspiring story cherished the world over. The beloved score’s songs include Some Enchanted Evening, I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair, and There is Nothin’ Like a Dame amidst big, Broadway performances and a chorus of American sailors and Navy nurses ready to take you to Bali Ha’i.
  • Anastasia: May 25-26, 2021: this dazzling show transports us from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love, and family.

The schedule for shows coming in 2021-2022 -- including "The Lion King" -- will be released later this year.
