Lee's Review: 'Miss Bala'

Is a gun-toting gringa enough to lure people away from the biggest football game of the year?

(WLTX) - Gloria is a struggling makeup artist in Los Angeles, who's entirely on her own.  The closest thing she has to family is her best friend, Suzu, who resides just across the border.  And with Gloria's help, she may just win the Miss Baja California Beauty Pageant!  But being in the wrong place at the wrong time can detour plans.

All of a sudden, Suzu is missing and Gloria is having to do dirty work for some dangerous thugs if she ever hopes to see her friend again.  She encounters authorities along the way (who should help her) but they're less cooperative than the gangsters!  So, once again, she's on her own.  But the gang leader is a bit smitten - so seduction may just be the key to her survival.

Given Gina Rodriguez' squeaky clean image, you may be asking, "where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?"  But Jane the Virgin is packing heat and taking aim.  So take note of all the gun violence, sexual and drug content, thematic material and language...because this girl is definitely stepping out of her comfort zone.

Too bad the film doesn't also rise to the challenge.  A slow pace and unintentional comedy hijack every effort Miss Rodriguez makes.  A different edit could have made all the difference.  But, looking at this one, the Leemoji can only say, "no me gusta!"  'Miss Bala' is a mis-fire.  Que lastima!
