(WLTX) -- A local firefighter caught his girlfriend's attention at a busy intersection with a proposal that left her speechless.

21-year-old Preston Davis, a full-time firefighter at the Lugoff Fire Department, proposed to Chelsea Rae Smith, 20, Saturday morning. Smith is a student at Winthrop University studying to become a teacher. The high-school sweethearts met at Lancaster High School five years ago.

Davis told News19 that he wanted to propose with the help of fire crews. "It's my life," he said. He also volunteers at another fire department.

It took Davis two months to plan the perfect proposal. He asked a friend to create a banner that read "Chelsea Rae, will you marry me?" It was seen waving on a fire truck that was playing their favorite song, "I Met a Girl" by William Michael Morgan.

Davis said Smith went to the department to pay him a visit and was "shocked" by what happened.
