James "Radio" Kennedy turned 70 on Friday, but he plans to celebrate his birthday Tuesday with the community.
He and Harold Jones, a former football coach at T.L. Hanna High School, are hosting the party from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at Chick-fil-A.
Kennedy still visits T.L. Hanna daily, walking the halls and helping out the football team. He got his nickname from carrying a transistor radio on his shoulder, as well as his love of music. He was inducted into the T.L. Hanna Athletic Hall of Fame earlier this year. The story of the friendship between Kennedy and Jones was made into a film "Radio" in 2003.
Jones is asking those who attend to make a donation to the Anderson Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club in Radio's honor, according to Kennedy's website.
"Radio, Cool Rock (Kennedy's brother George Allen) and I have started collecting donations for the Anderson Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club at Sam's Club," Jones said in a statement on the website. "At Christmas, Radio and I ring the bell and collect money for the Salvation Army's red kettles and we collect money for the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club of Anderson once a month on Saturday, January-October at Sam's Club."
