Riverbanks Zoo's Lights Before Christmas taking place

The zoo has come up with a safe way to hold the annual event.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Riverbanks Zoo is celebrating its 33rd annual lights before Christmas.

It's open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on select nights until December 30th.

The zoo says their usual events are still taking place but with coronavirus precautions -- including Santa at the village -- s'mores around the fire and over one million Christmas lights.  There's also a 30-foot animated story tree and the zoo says they're the only place where it "snows" every night.

Santa is available at the village at 6 p.m. through December 23.

The zoo said they have made modifications to ensure the safety of guests, the animals, and staff.

"People are so excited that we're able to do this this year, that we're able to offer this," said Susan O'Cain, Riverbanks Zoo's Director of Marketing and Communication.

Riverbanks members will receive at least one free visit to Lights Before Christmas with a valid membership card and photo ID (guest passes will not be accepted). General admission is $12 for adults and $10 for children ages 2 – 12. Children under 2 are admitted free. Reserve your timed tickets today.
