COLUMBIA, S.C. — According to reports, there are more than 130,000 children in kinship care across South Carolina. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, godparents -- and non-related adults such as neighbors, family friends, educators and mentors -- are raising children that their biological parents cannot, for whatever reason.

"Assuming the role of caregiver is a big undertaking -- emotionally, mentally and financially," says Social Work Manager Lee Patterson. "We want to advocate for these families. Providing a strong support base and much sought-after resources lets them know they're not alone."

The South Carolina Department of Social Services has granted $35,000 to Richland Library to provide a free, nine-week Kinship Care Workshop where participants will have the opportunity to share their own experiences while learning how to help children regulate their emotions, feel connected and build strengths.

The workshop will run 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. every Thursday, beginning Jan. 9 and continuing through March 5 at Beulah Baptist Church, 9487 Garners Ferry Rd., Hopkins. Hot lunch is included with workshop.

Register to attend at richlandlibrary.com/event or call (803) 929-3417.

There will be another workshop offering in Spring 2020.
