Businesses excited for Devine Street developments

New housing, new restaurants and lots of excitement coming to Devine street.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — New homes and new shops heading to Devine Street have locals ready for an increase in foot traffic.

If you've driven by Devine Street in the past months you've no doubt seen construction crews and homes being built. According to Estate Management Company, the group overseeing development in the Devine District, two projects are currently underway for the area.

The first is called 'The Cottages', at the corner of Maple and Lee streets. This site will have two 3-bedroom homes available for rent. A spokesperson tells News19 construction will be complete in December with renters moving in by January.

The second project is being called 'The Green'. The spokesperson says Sully's Steamers and local bakery Ally & Eloise will occupy two store fronts right on Devine Street.

Just a few doors down the street from the site of The Green is Just The Thing - a store owned by Tracy Wright. She says there hasn't been a sandwich shop near her store. She feels that the new shops could mean more business for her shop.

"The more the merrier on the street. I love that Devine street has always been locally owned businesses so I think that's a nice draw, and everyone's generally really supportive of each other. I think if someone comes in and offers especially something different that we don't have, it just makes Devine street that much stronger."

She adds even with new construction, Devine Street's core and ambiance has not changed during her 20 years there.

"It's stayed the same because there's still a lot of other neighbors that have stayed there that long, but we've seen so much growth especially across Devine street, and with new merchants coming all the time."

Developers say tours for The Cottage will likely begin in the next month and once construction for The Green is done, those shops will begin their move-in.
