Restaurant, shops along Main Street Columbia to relocate, new businesses set to open

Columbia businessman relocating several operations amongst his Main Street properties

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Columbia entrepreneur Scott Middleton is planning to move the location of some of his businesses in the Main Street business district.

Middleton, who owns multiple properties in the 1600 and 1700 blocks of downtown, is shuffling locations for the most part to give the existing businesses larger spaces while bringing in new businesses in their old locations.

Follow along with the planned moves:

  • Shoppes on Main and Good Life Café, currently at 1604 and 1614 Main, respectively, will move to the bottom floors of 1216 and 1218 Taylor Street, next door to Hotel Trundle. The new spaces are approximately 8,000 sq. ft. each, he says.
  • Two 1-bedroom apartments above the retail spaces will be renovated for short term leasing (AirBnBs).
  • 24/7 Health & Fitness gym at 1614 Main – situated along the alleyway connecting the Cannon Parking Garage on Taylor Street with Main Street – will move to  Peak Drift Brewing which is under construction at 3452 North Main. The over 4-acre brewery/gym location will also feature basketball and volleyball courts and should open this Fall.
  • The Main Stage event venue at 1824 Main will also move to the North Main brewery location. In The Main Stage space, Middleton is planning for an upscale Japanese hibachi steak and sushi restaurant. Middleton says the renovated space will have 14 hibachi grills that will seat 12 people each, and a Japanese-styled garden area. He is aiming for an opening date in September, if there are no delays in construction.

Middleton is a prolific entrepreneur, owning multiple businesses in the 1600 and 1700 blocks of Main Street. Over the years, he has garnered funds through the Bailey Bill to renovate older buildings to house businesses such those mentioned above as well as The Grand bowling alley at 1621 Main.
