SC Secretary of State names 'angel' charities for 2021

Angels represent the charitable organizations in South Carolina with the highest percentage of money actually going toward charity

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Secretary of State Mark Hammond released the list of Angels of 2021 -- the charitable organizations who have the highest percentage of monies collected actually going to fund program services. Fifteen Angels are being recognized in 2021.

Angels are selected by the Secretary of State and public nomination. In order to be considered an Angel organization, a charity must adhere to the following criteria: 

  • has devoted 80 percent or more of its total expenditures to charitable programs
  • has been in existence for three or more years
  • must make good use of volunteer services
  • must receive minimal funding from grants
  • has a significant presence in South Carolina
  • must be in compliance with the state's Solicitation of Charitable Funds Act.

  • Helping Hand of Myrtle Beach, Inc., Myrtle Beach, SC 96.0%
  • Kershaw Area Resource Exchange, Inc., Kershaw, SC 96.8%
  • Kids On Point, Inc., Charleston, SC 86.8%
  • Moss Creek Marines, Inc., Hilton Head Island, SC 97.3%

In addition to the Angels list, there is the 2020-2021 Wise Giving Report from Secretary Hammond that offers giving tips to donors and includes the 2021 Give Smart Watch List that names 10 charities that have reported spending less than 40% of their expenses on charitable programs or have refused to comply with filing requirements of the Solicitation of Charitable Funds Act.
