'A walking angel': Family, friends of slain USC Upstate senior speak out

The outpouring of support for Evan Gaines, a USC Upstate student who was killed, continues to grow nearly a week after his death from a gunshot wound.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — It's been nearly a week since officials say 22-year-old Evan Jeffrey Gaines was found shot to death at the Campus Edge Apartments in Spartanburg, but it's unclear if we're any closer to finding out what happened to him.

According to friends, the Columbia native  was a senior studying business at the University of South Carolina Upstate with hopes of becoming an entrepreneur.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office hasn't released any details in the case, including what they think led up to the shooting or if there's a suspect that they're looking for. However, USC Upstate issued a statement saying the incident was "isolated" and that there was not a larger threat to other students or the campus.

Since Gaines' death, the outpouring of support for him has continued to grow as family and friends grieve the loss of their loved one.

His sister Erra Roundtree described Gaines as 'a walking angel.' He was an A-B honor roll student during his high school years at W.J. Keenan High, and a basketball player who loved spending time with friends.

"It's hard losing anybody, but losing someone that grew to be your brother to that senseless act, it just, it's touching," said Rodrick Jones, a friend.

Jones says he and Gaines grew up together, attending W.G. Sanders Middle School and later Keenan High.

"Evan was, you know, it depends on the day with Evan," Jones said. "Sometime's you'll have an Evan who's really goofy and silly, then you'll have an Evan who's really straight to the point and all about his business."

Although they attended separate colleges, Jones says they hoped to graduate together.

"We all had hopes and dreams of one day graduating," Jones said. "At the end of the day, his mom was my mom; his sister was my sister, and for us all to lose him, it's just going to be hard. It's going to be tough to get past this one."

According to family, Gaines' funeral is set for Wednesday, April 3 in Columbia at Bethlehem Baptist Church on 1028 Eastman Street.
