Lexington man charged after guns found on school campus

Weapons were left in a bag at Lexington High School

LEXINGTON, S.C. — A Lexington County man has been arrested after allegedly having weapons on school property after guns were found in a bag at Lexington High School.

The incident took place Tuesday, Jan. 7. According to Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon, Brent Wilson Skinner, 48, was exercising around the school campus during the early morning hours before students arrived. Two handguns were found in a bag he left behind in a parking lot after his workout.

According to Lexington District One, a student found the gun around 7 a.m. and opened it with the intention of identifying the owner. When he opened it and saw that it contained some guns, he immediately notified an administrator. That administrator notified the school resource officer.

Skinner turned himself in Thursday morning and has been charged with carrying weapons on school grounds. He is being held in the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.

A portion of the statement from Lexington District One reads:

"The district is proud of the student who noticed something out of the ordinary and reported it. Due to his vigilance, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department was able to begin an investigation quickly.
