SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. — A teenager who allegedly sold drug-laced candy to Southampton High School students appeared in court Thursday morning for an arraignment.

18-year-old Jaden Phillips is charged with felony possession with intent to distribute, felony distribution to someone under 18 and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Eight students became sick and were hospitalized after ingesting candy on Tuesday.

According to court documents, the students bought the candy from an 18-year-old, believing them to be marijuana edibles. The student told investigators she received the candy from Phillips and brought them to sell at school.

Phillips remains in jail, and is scheduled for a bond hearing next Tuesday.

All eight students who became ill have been released from the hospital.
