SC trooper shot a week earlier gets hero's sendoff before trip home

According to officials with SCHP, Frazier will now continue his recovery from home.

CHARLESTON, S.C. — A South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper who authorities said received a face wound from gunfire just a week earlier is heading home.

South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) officials shared a video of Lance Corporal B.A. Frazier as he left the Courtyard Charleston Waterfront Hotel on Sunday morning. During the special send-off, Frazier was met by the applause of first responders and members of law enforcement.

According to officials with SCHP, Frazier will now continue his recovery from home.

Only a week earlier, authorities said Frazier was shot while conducting a traffic stop in Bamberg County. However, by Monday, officials said he had been making significant progress.

During his send-off, Frazier was wearing a mask but clearly smiling as he walked through a tunnel of well-wishers.

Meanwhile, the man accused of shooting him, 37-year-old Derrick Gathers, is in custody after leading another trooper, a Bamberg County deputy, and a Bamberg Police officer on a chase in a crash that ended with a crash into the steps of a Branchville home in Orangeburg County.

He faces charges of attempted murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and failure to stop for blue lights.

The original stop that led to the ordeal, according to authorities, was for driving over 20 mph over the speed limit.
