FAIRFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — The Fairfield County Sheriff's Office is working to determine how and why a student came to have a gun at an area elementary school.

The sheriff's office announced on Wednesday that a student was found with a gun by a staff member at Kelly Miller Elementary School. School officials then notified a school resource officer who began investigating the incident and that investigation is still underway.

Sheriff Will Montgomery said that the find was "concerning" and only made more worrisome given other tragedies at schools across the country.

"Although we are not exactly sure how the child came into possession of this gun at this time, I want to take this time to remind parents and other adults to be responsible gun owners and to safely secure their weapons to protect our children," he said.

The sheriff said that the ongoing nature of the incident and the fact that it involves a child means the information his department can release is limited. However, a sheriff's office spokesperson said the weapon was not loaded at the time it was seized.
