Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia police have arrested a suspect in connection with a murder that happened just over two years ago.

Jacob Onay Green, 24, is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

Officers say back on November 13, 2013, 21-year-old Nathaniel McKelvin was shot while on a porch on Martha Street in Columbia. Over the course of their investigation, Green was identified as a suspect in the crime.

"It's healing," McKelvin's mother, Roberta McKelvin, said in a statement released by police. "It helps me very much to know that he has been charged. It's a relief for us," says Roberta McKelvin. "I want to ask him why? You took our loved one from us. It's a feeling that I cannot explain. My son was a good man… gone too soon. Sometimes I think that my child was so nice. Maybe if he wasn't so nice, he would be here today."

While an exact motive hasn't been determined, police believe the crime has ties to gang activity.

Green was already in jail in connection with a shooting that happened in Columbia's Five Points back in March of 2014, just four months after McKelvin's killing. Officers say in that incident, Green is accused of shooting a ma in the leg during an argument.
