890 new SC virus cases, 14 new confirmed deaths

This brings the total number of people confirmed cases to 26,572, probable cases to 41, confirmed deaths to 673, and zero probable deaths.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) Tuesday announced 890 new confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 and 14 additional confirmed deaths. There are currently 824 hospital beds occupied by patients who have either tested positive or are under investigation for COVID-19.

This brings the total number of people confirmed cases to 26,572, probable cases to 41, confirmed deaths to 673, and zero probable deaths.

On a call with Columbia City Councilmembers Tuesday, Dr. Linda Bell, the State Epidemiologist, said there has been a dramatic increase in cases involving young people. She said from March to May, the majority of cases were people over 50. But she said since the week following Memorial Day, there's been a flip, with younger people making up the majority.

Overall, 42 percent of all of the confirmed cases since March have happened within the last two weeks.

She said right now is a critical juncture.

"If we don't drastically increase mask wearing and physical distancing we will see case counts rise more,"  Bell said.

So far, she said hospitalizations have not risen by the same rate as cases, but she said that could change.
