Nearly 900 protesters get free COVID-19 test offered by Norton Healthcare over the weekend

The testing site will be up on June 6 and 7 from noon until 4 p.m. at 3101 Poplar Level Rd. People wanting to get tested have to register through Norton.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Norton Healthcare offered free COVID-19 testing, during the weekend of June 6, to anyone who believes they may have been exposed during recent events in our community.

Monday, June 8 Update: Norton officials say nearly 900 individuals who have taken part in demonstrations and large gatherings in Louisville over the past two weeks were tested for COVID-19 over the weekend. Health officials say 600 of them were tested at its site on Poplar Level Road on Saturday and Sunday.

Another 278 were tested at the Bluewater Diagnostic Laboratories site in the parking lot behind City Hall at Sixth and Market streets.

“Providing free testing opportunites is important to containing the spread of COVID19,” said Dr. Sarah Moyer, director of the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness and the city’s chief health strategist. “However,” Dr. Moyer cautioned, “testing indicates only a point in time. Testing negative for COVID-19 today doesn’t mean that you won’t develop the disease at a future date. Even if you test negative, you should continue to monitor yourself for symptoms such as cough, fever, trouble breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches and loss of smell or taste. If you begin to experience symptoms, stay at home and contact your healthcare provider.”

Moyer added, “Our city has gone through some very painful events over the past months, but the Department of Public Health and Wellness continues to work to address the root causes that have led to the health inequities we are seeing during the COVID-19 pandemic. I’m grateful to everyone who came out to be tested.”

People wanting to get tested do not need a referral from a physician or provider to get tested, however registration is required as tests are limited. To register, click here. Participants also will need to bring their ID to the testing.
