DHEC reports another flu-related death in SC, urges preventative care

Ninety-six hospitalizations and one flu-related death were reported between December 15 and 21 in S.C.

SOUTH CAROLINA, USA — South Carolina health officials are urging everyone to seek preventative care, after recent studies show widespread flu activity in the state.

As of December 21, South Carolina experienced six consecutive weeks of increased flu-activity, according to recent data from the state Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).

DHEC reports more than 200 lab-confirmed cases of the flu virus last week in South Carolina, with an increase in activity in counties across the Midlands including Sumter, Richland, Lexington and Kershaw.

Recent data from the department shows 407 flu-related hospitalizations in the current flu season and 11 flu-related deaths.

Ninety-six hospitalizations and one flu-related death were reported between December 15 and 21.

While the flu vaccine can vary in effectiveness, it is the best way to prevent the flu virus and its potentially serious complications, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Chris Delcamp, a spokesperson with DHEC, agrees.

“The first thing that people need to do is get the flu vaccine. We think that's the best protection against the flu. Not only is it going to protect you, it's going to protect those around you," Delcamp said. “If you still get the flu virus, it's shown to lessen the severity.”

Antiviral drugs like oseltamivir phosphate (available as a generic version or under the trade name Tamiflu®) are a good second line of defense to help treat the flu virus, the CDC reports.

Antiviral drugs recommended by the CDC are not sold over the counter and must be prescribed by a healthcare provider.

These drugs should be used in conjunction with the flu vaccine and, if taken at the first sign of infection, can lessen fever and flu symptoms and even shorten the time of the illness.
