Lee's Review: 'Glass'

Will 'Glass' be a smash? Or will it have a plot you can see right through?

(WLTX) - Get ready for the sequel you never saw coming!  And we're not talking about a sequel to just one movie...but TWO!  Director M. Night Shyamalan has created a long-awaited follow-up to his sophomore effort, 'Unbreakable,' and merged it with a continuation to his more recent film, 'Split.'

Apparently, all of these characters were supposed to meet way back in the year 2000.  But, in the interest of time, Kevin Wendell Crumb (and his two dozen personalities) were trimmed from the 'Unbreakable' script and made into a second movie some sixteen years later.  So, now, the director's original vision has finally taken shape.  But does it amount to a grand narrative?  Or is it just a product of self indulgence?

Because Mr. Shyamalan's films always contain surprise twists, it's difficult to explain the plot without spoiling the two previous movies.  I'll just say that Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson are at opposite ends of the spectrum...and James McAvoy is all over the place!

Personally, I found 'Split' to be the more entertaining of the earlier films, mainly due to McAvoy's intense schizophrenia.  'Unbreakable' was a more surreal piece, constructed from an absurd theory.  Now, this deranged character is functioning in a mundane world with much more talk than action.

That's not to say the film doesn't have it's fair share of violence, bloody images and language.  But the fusion of these two stories seems pointless!  And, at 129 minutes, not only does the movie go nowhere - it also takes forever to get there...which gives us a very livid Leemoji.

'Glass' may still shatter the box office this weekend.  But, based on my reflections, I'd pass on 'Glass.'
