ELLISVILLE, Mo. – Two people are in custody after 13 dogs were found in an overheated, abandoned car in Ellisville Tuesday morning.

An employee of the Post-Dispatch distribution center noticed a vehicle in the parking lot had fogged up windows and looked inside to find 13 dogs. The Honda Civic had apparently been parked in the lot for several weeks, but police believe the dogs were in the car for six to eights hours.

The employee grabbed the dogs some water and called police.

Two of the thirteen dogs were in bad shape and were taken to Ellisville Vet Hospital. One of the dogs died and the other one is ‘doing better.’ The dog that died had a core temperature of 107 degrees. Some of the dogs will have brain damage due to the heat.

This is an important reminder to not leave pets in a car, the outside temperature was 75 degrees.

Police have two people in custody and have not released their identities.

The 12 surviving dogs were taken to St. Louis County Animal Care and Control.

It’s unclear when or if any of the dogs will be available for adoption.
