6 Taken to Hospital After Chemical Leak at West Columbia Plant

Ammonia leaked at the West Columbia bakery Saturday, which ultimately led to six people seeking medical treatment.

West Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Six people had to be taken to a hospital after a ammonia leaked inside the Otis Spunkmeyer plant in West Columbia.

Lexington County Fire Services officials say they were called to the facility around 10:30 a.m. to assist the workers there.

According to officials, a crew inside the plant was doing maintenance on a line. During the process, they realized there was still some residual gas in the line, and they worked to secure it.

Several people inside the plant began experiencing side effects, and were taken to the hospital to be examined. Their exposure, however, was said to be non life-threatening.

Ammonia dissipates quickly in the atmosphere, and officials say there was no threat to the public.

Firefighters went from room to room in the building to make sure each was safe.
