A City Pauses To Honor Veterans on Memorial Day

To honor veterans and those lost, hundreds packed South Sumter park for the ninth annual Memorial Day and Fish Fry event.

Sumter, SC (WLTX) — To honor veterans and those lost, hundreds packed South Sumter park for the ninth annual Memorial Day and Fish Fry event.

The event culminated with veterans from World War II present being honored for their service.

“We’re here for our veterans today,” said Calvin Hastie, Sumter councilman and a 20-year military veteran. “We’re here to honor those that gave the ultimate sacrifice of their lives, and we want to let the young people know how important memorial day is.”

The veterans received American flag pins for their service. Sumter residents also had a chance to enjoy fish, hotdogs and live performances from Sumter County natives.

Sgt. James Felder, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, says he is hopeful the event was beneficial to both adults and children.

“We hope they learn their history,” Felder said. “I’m in preservation mode in my elder years to try to preserve not only artifacts but individuals that have contributed so much, so that’s my focus.”

Hastie was impressed with the reception the event received from the community.

“You know, I’m a 20-year veteran. Been all over the world with my family, and for the whole city to pause just to say thank you to the veterans . . . many folks do not know what it means for someone to just say thank for your service,” Hastie said.

More than 40 veterans were honored at the event Monday.
