COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office has charged a man in the June 15 shooting on Fourth Avenue, off Edisto Drive in Orangeburg, that left a man dead.

Sheriff Leroy Ravenell says Leroy Bowers, 35, has been charged with one count each of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Orangeburg County Sheriff's investigators responded to a call about a man shot around 11 p.m. at a location on Fourth Avenue. Investigators arrived at the scene and found a 29-year-old man lying in the roadway near the junction with Rume Court. The man appeared to have suffered from multiple gunshot wounds. 

Area residents told investigators they had been enjoying a cookout when they heard multiple shots fired nearby.

They called 911 after seeing an apparent victim of the shooting in the street.
