Benedict College student killed in shooting in Orangeburg

The incident over the weekend also wounded a Claflin College student.

Orangeburg, SC (WLTX) - A Benedict College student was killed in a shooting over the weekend that also injured a Claflin University student. 

The Orangeburg County Coroner's office confirmed 20-year-old Donovan Smalls of Goose Creek died of injuries sustained in the shooting. An autopsy will be performed on him Wednesday. 

"The entire Benedict College family mourns the tragic loss of our fallen Tiger, Donovan Smalls," Benedict College said in a statement. "As a community, we ask that the privacy of the Smalls family and Donovan’s classmates and colleagues be respected during this very difficult time."

According to an incident report from the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety, officers were called out after 2 a.m. for noise complaints from a party at a home on Summers Avenue and Amelia Street. People then began reporting what sounded like fireworks, which later turned out to be gunfire. 

When they arrived on the scene they found a crowd of people and Smalls laying on the ground with a gunshot wound. Smalls was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. 

A female Claflin student was also wounded and taken to the hospital, but she has since been released. . 

"I saw the two crime scene investigator trucks here at the corner of Hendley Street and Summers Avenue, and there were police officers blocking the street here, and blocking the street up to the stop sign. 

Officers haven't yet said what they think led up to the shooting. The search continues for a potential suspect in the case.
