Board unanimously votes to fire Richland County Elections Director

Rokey Suleman was under fire after 1,040 missed ballots in the November 2018 election.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- After a unanimous vote, Rokey Suleman will no longer be the Director of the Richland County Elections and Voter Registration.

Five newly-appointed board members decided to terminate Suleman's services Wednesday evening at an elections board meeting.

This follows an executive order by Governor Henry McMaster to clean house on the board, after 1,000 votes were never counted in the November 2018 election.

Suleman remained in his position, despite announcing his resignation in February.

Board members tell News 19 since the previous board was removed, Suleman remained in his position as director until Wednesday.

Dr. Charles P. Austin Sr., the new Chair of the Board, says Suleman's contract expired April 30.

Austin says the board discussed moving the agency in a new direction under new leadership.

"We have the responsibility as the governing board to restore the confidence and trust of the voters of Richland County," said Austin. "So this was a time to actually observe and make some determination about the direction of the agency."

Suleman says it was a series of errors that led to 1,040 missed ballots, and more than 800 absentee votes were missing because of a technician's error.

Thad Hall, the Deputy Elections Director, will serve as acting director until the board finds a permanent replacement.
