COLUMBIA, S.C. — A former jail officer is facing charges after allegedly helping inmates gain access to drugs.

Taliyah Fewell , 23, is accused smuggling drugs into the Richland County Detention Center, where she was a jail officer. She is charged with furnishing contraband.

On one occasion, Fewell reportedly gave an inmate tobacco and marijuana, which staff later found hidden behind a shower on April 1.

A few days prior on March 31, one inmate saw Fewell use a Skittles box to smuggle an orange lighter and marijuana into the jail. She later gave those drugs to several inmates, according to a report.

Fewell was arrested Monday at her apartment, where marijuana, rolling papers and letters between her and inmates were found.

A pistol was also found at the apartment. However, her roommate and boyfriend 32-year-old Dwantrez Keith admitted to firearm was his. He was charged with possession of a stolen pistol.

Both Fewell and Keith were booked at the Richland County Detention Center.
