Columbia Remembers the Lasting Legacy of Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin, who died at the age of 76 Thursday, will be remembered for a voice that commanded respect right here in Columbia, and all over the globe.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - She had a talent that touched the world.

Aretha Franklin, who died at the age of 76 Thursday, will be remembered for a voice that commanded respect in Columbia, and all over the globe.

Doug Williams, the program director at KISS 103.1 FM, has a had a career that's spanned over 30 years in the music industry, and he believes her voice was unlike any other.

Williams says, “It commanded your attention immediately and she was a stylist. She knew how to make a song come alive. She would give songs legs if you will. Nobody could touch her body of work.”

Preach Jacobs is a musician and a photographer who took photos of Aretha Franklin during her performance at the Three River Music Festival in Columbia back in 2006.

“It was great to see one of those mount rush more artist come to town," Jacob says. "I was a kid I was a 22-year-old like I was kind of nervous, but it was a great experience. I think Aretha kind of embodied the idea of the background in gospel the background in blues creating this concoction of the black experience which makes soul.”

Jacob goes on to say, “Her legacy is her authenticity that will last forever.”
