Columbia's Mayor Benjamin gains national recognition

Columbia, SC (WLTX) — Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin has been named to Ebony Magazine's 2018 Power 100 list of influential and inspiring African Americans.

The national magazine has compiled the list of the top 100 movers and shakers within the Black community for 70 years, with categories that include Entrepreneurs, Innovators, Power Players, Community Crusaders, MVPs, Disruptors, and Arts & Entertainment.

Benjamin was listed on the Disruptors list among such other notables as Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, the youngest woman ever elected to Congress; Andrew Gilliam, Mayor of Tallahassee and the Democratic nominee for Florida Governor; Bryan Stevenson, founder/executive director of Equal Justice Initiative; and Stacey Abrams, Democratic nominee for Governor of Georgia.

When reached via phone, Benjamin said that it was an honor to be recognized for working hard to do as much as we can for as many as we can in Columbia.

Benjamin was heading back from a meeting in Montgomery, AL, where he and other mayors from around the United States were attending a the launch Mayors & Business Leaders Center on Inclusive and Compassionate Cities. The mission of the Center is to combat hate of all kinds and to improve dialog between members of the community.

Earlier this year, Benjamin was elected President of The US Conference of Mayors.
