The S.C. Department of Transportation (SCDOT) issued a smoke advisory for drivers traveling along I-20 West Monday morning.

Specifically, SCDOT reported low visibility and delays along I-20 West between Exit 82 (Spears Creek Church Road) and Exit 80 (Clemson Road) and surrounding areas.

According to Doug Wood with the S.C. Forestry Commission, the smoke seen on and around I-20 and I-77 is from two prescribed burns that were conducted yesterday on Ft. Jackson.

Wood says the forecast for those burns was originally calling for good ventilation and hence good smoke dispersion, but the weather did not cooperate and is making the fire "lay down" in those areas.

However, Woods says we should see the smoke clearing soon -- possibly within the next hour or two -- due to rising humidity along with good ventilation in the forecast.
