Inmate dies in maximum security prison in South Carolina

Furtick was serving a 30-year sentence for a kidnapping conviction in Orangeburg County.

Ridgeville, SC (WLTX) — An inmate has died in a maximum security prison in South Carolina.

Officials with the S.C. Department of Corrections say 31-year-old Derrick Lamont Furtick died at Lieber Correctional Institution in Dorchester County around 9 p.m. Monday.

There were no details available on the death Tuesday.

Furtick was serving a 30-year sentence for a kidnapping conviction in Orangeburg County last year. He was transferred from Kirkland Correctional Institution in August of 2017. Furtick's projected release date was listed as Feb. 16, 2042.

Lieber Correctional Institution is a level three prison located in Ridgeville, SC.
