A Kershaw County elementary school was evacuated as a precaution Thursday morning due to a strange odor, according to Captain Jack Rushing with the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office.

Officials say staff experienced an unusual odor in the front office of Pine Tree Hill Elementary School this morning that affected several staff persons but no students.

All staff and students were then evacuated from the building while emergency preparedness officials checked the air quality three times throughout the buildings, according to Kershaw County School District officials.

District officials say the air quality has now been deemed fine, and students and staff have returned inside.

"The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority, and we greatly appreciate the quick response from our emergency preparedness officials today," said Mary Anne Byrd with Kershaw County School District.
