COLUMBIA, S.C. — A man has been charged with assaulting a security guard at a Columbia hotel. 

John Holmes has been charged with 2nd degree assault and battery. Police say he shot the victim, a credential and armed security guard at the Embassy Suites hotel on Stoneridge Drive, on July 8.

Holmes was shot after the victim returned fire.

Both the victim and Holmes were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Holmes is being held at the Richland County Detention Center.
