Man identified in Friday night I-26 multi-vehicle collision

IRMO, S.C. — A Friday night multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 26 in Irmo left one Chapin man dead. 

According to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts, the collision happened on Friday, January 31 at 8 p.m. on I-26 eastbound at the 97-mile marker entrance ramp in Irmo, SC.

According to the report, Johnson Reynolds Butchart, 54, from Chapin, was entering the interstate when he struck another vehicle, then he was struck by another vehicle.  

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Butchart was driving a Ford Ranger pickup truck and traveling east on I-26 when he lost control and initially struck a Dodge Ram pickup truck, which ran off the right side of the road. 

After the initial crash, the Ford Ranger then struck a Freightliner tractor trailer, which was entering I-26 East from Exit 97.  

Butchart died at the scene. An autopsy indicated that the cause of death was due to blunt trauma to the body. According to the report, Butchart was wearing a seat belt. 

The Richland County Coroner’s Office and the SC Highway Patrol are investigating the incident.
