80-year-old struck by car while trying to catch his dog near Five Points

The man is in critical condition, according to police. The dog returned home safely.

Columbia police blocked off the 1800 block of Blossom Street Tuesday morning after a male pedestrian was struck by a vehicle.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A man is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle on Blossom Street while trying to catch his dog Tuesday morning. 

Columbia police say an 80-year-old man was struck by a vehicle in the 1800 Block of Blossom Street sometime after 11 a.m. Tuesday morning. At this time, police believe he was injured after running across the roadway in an attempt to catch his dog.  

The man is said to be in critical condition at a local hospital, according to police.

Investigators say the driver remained on scene. 

The dog did return safely home, according to police.
