Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Members of the Fairfield County High School honors choir gathered at Element Electronics for a special performance before heading to New York City to perform at the famous Carnegie Hall.

"This is an awesome awesome experience" says choir director, Alicia Graham.

The students thought they were performing for a celebration of some kind, but it turns out they were the ones being celebrated — and in a huge way.

Element Electronics surprised the singing group with a check for $30,000.

Along with $20,000 raised by the choir, the surprise check from Element Electronics will fully cover the rest of the groups trip to the "Empire State," and they couldn't be happier.

"I was shocked I was literally shocked when I opened up the box and that thirty thousand dollar check was there," Graham said.

"I am overwhelmed excited blessed just to be apart of this and apart of this community. I'm just full of joy" says Curtis Martin, a student with the choir.

Martin lost him mom late last year and says the choir has been more than just a group its been a family.

"They've been there for me every step of the way. I love them and I adore them and I'm glad to be apart of this chorous," he said.

Graham says when she thinks about this whole experience she is simply overjoyed, "It warms my heart to know that we have pur community standing behind us all the way."
