Newberry Police Combating Crime Around Lake Murray

Prosperity, SC (WLTX) - The Newberry County Sheriff's Department says they put more officers around Lake Murray to combat the rise of crime in the summer time.

Newberry County Sheriff Lee Fosters says with the weather heating up, more people are coming out to Lake Murray and sometimes that means more crime.

"So many people like to go down to lake. Then you got a few people that don't know how to act and just go down there and ruin it for everybody," explained Foster.

Foster says on Thursday night, 28-year-old Matthew Jackson stabbed a man at the SCE&G boat ramp off of Sunset Road. He says it's known as a family-friendly area.

"People that go to that park to experience the beauty and serenity of beautiful Lake Murray, they shouldn't be exhibited to that type of behavior either," said Foster.

Foster says more people out on the lake means more patrol.

"We have a significant number of people that live on the lake full-time. We put extra people (out there). We patrol it different than we might would during the winter months when there's not as many people at the lake but we have to end up putting extra people down to patrol the lake area," explained Foster.

He says he has no problem with people having fun on Lake Murray but they need to be reasonable.

"Regardless whether you're under the influence of alcohol or not, it's not fine to just act in a vulgar, violent attitude especially towards anybody else. It's not okay and we're not going to tolerate it," said Foster.

Foster says if you go out to the lake, you should always be aware of your surroundings. He says if you see something out of the ordinary or doesn't seem right, you should call 9-1-1.
