One dead after head-on crash on I-26 in Newberry County

The accident happened around 12 p.m. Sunday on I-26 East, approximately 7 miles east of Newberry.

NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. — One person is dead after a fatal accident on I-26 in Newberry County Sunday afternoon.

The accident happened around 12 p.m. Sunday on I-26 East near the mile marker 63, approximately 7 miles east of Newberry, when the driver of a 2007 Honda ran off the left side of the road, crossed the grass median and struck a 2006 Infinity SUV head on, according to Trooper Joe Hovis with S.C. Highway Patrol. 

Troopers say the driver of the 2007 Honda, who crossed the media and struck the SUV, died at the scene. The driver of the SUV, who was struck by the Honda, was injured and transported by EMS to the hospital for treatment. Both drivers were wearing a seat belt.
