One dead after tractor trailer veers off I-26, hits pickup, crashes into cars at dealership

The tractor trailer veered off of I-26, through a fence and crashed into a truck on Fernandina Road before striking several parked cars at a car dealership.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — One person is dead after a tractor trailer veered off of I-26 onto Fernandina Road and crashed into a pickup truck Monday evening, according to troopers with S.C. Highway Patrol.

Around 7:08 p.m. Monday, troopers say the driver of a 2010 International tractor trailer traveling west on I-26 went off the right side of the road, through a fence and crashed head on into a 1993 GMC pickup truck traveling east on Fernandina Road.

The driver of the GMC, who was entrapped in the pickup truck, died at the scene, according to troopers. He has been identified as 51-year-old Calvin Ray Casson of Columbia.

The driver of the tractor trailer was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. Both drivers were wearing a seat belt.

After crashing into the pickup trick, troopers say the tractor trailer continued right into the parking lot of Dick Smith Nissan on Fernandina Road, where it struck several parked cars.

S.C. Highway Patrol continues to investigate the accident.
