LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — A man named a person of interest in a homicide investigation at a local apartment complex has been detained.

J.W. Hayes was being sought after a woman was found dead by ger caretaker Friday morning at the Waters at Berryhill Apartments in Lexington County. Hayes, who deputies say is related to the woman, was detained Friday.

Deputies spent hours at the scene, leaving neighbors shocked to see a homicide investigation at the complex.

“I’m just coming home from work and I saw the crime scene and everything and just wondering what was going on," said Zandra Crumpto. "Nothing happens ever like this in this neighborhood."

Kimberlee Dinkins, who comes to the complex from time to time, can’t believe Hayes is a person of interest in this case. Every time she's seen him, he would be walking down the road, listening to music and shadowboxing.

“Him being a person of interest is just shocking because you see him walking up and down the street thinking he wouldn’t hurt anyone," Dinkins said.

Details about the homicide are limited at this time as deputies continue to investigate, and the name of the victims hasn't been released yet.
