Columbia, SC (WLTX) — Police are investigating a suspicious death in the Rosewood area, according to the Columbia Police Department.
Police say they initially responded to a home in the 900 block of Huntington Avenue after a reported burglary. Upon arriving, police say they found the front door open and a deceased woman inside the home.
“We’re in the initial stages of the crime scene investigation," said Columbia police chief Skip Holbrook. "We’ve also talked with neighbors to gather additional information.”
The community say they're concerned about this happening in their neighborhood. While the Richland County Coroner's Office hasn't identified the deceased individual, people in the neighborhood say she was the sweetest lady they've ever knew.
Leslie Peters said she would see the lady walk her dog on the street.
"She need a trip to the Publix, I'd take her to the Publix. If she needed to go shopping, I'd take her shopping and help her out. I don't know too much about her but that doesn't mean she wasn't one of my neighbors," said Peters.
Peters says the lady was always checking up on neighbors around the area.
"She was the person when I first moved in and told me lock my doors, make sure my gate's locked, you can't just trust anyone, and make sure you're safe. It really hits home that his happened to her," said Peters.
Marcus Whitlark is having a hard time wrapping his mind around it all.
"Generous, charitable, and kind. We're going to miss her. She was a fixture in this neighborhood. Very kind lady. Mind her own business. She always quick to say hi to you," explained Whitlark.
